Cherish is a love letter to Gwendolyn Brooks.

A love letter to Gwendolyn’s legacy can be seen in Cherish 2019, a visual and sonic interpretation of the renowned poet’s works. Born in 1917, Brooks grew up in Chicago, where she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1950 for Annie Allen, a collection of poetry that centered on an African American girl approaching adulthood. Her work has won many awards and she was named the state’s Poet Laureate in 1968. She was appointed Library of Congress’s Poetry Consultant from 1985-1986. She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1976.

Brooks’s poetry is both varied and complex. The range of themes and linguistic styles reflected her restless curiosity about life. Her poems are moving and compassionate, yet also satiric. Her poetry focuses on the relationship between man and nature while expressing love, loss, and hope.

Brooks’s poetic career began in her childhood on the South Side of Chicago. She spent hours practicing her poetry and growing to love words. She was encouraged by her parents, who believed she was gifted. She published her poems in the Chicago Defender and won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

During her lifetime, Brooks worked to elevate the status of African American women in the writing world. She was the first Black woman to be named a poet laureate in the United States. Brooks was also a literary advocate, hosting poetry workshops, writing competitions, and theater projects at schools. Her work spanned the globe, and she lived her life with a passion and compassion for others.

Brooks’s poetry reflected the African-American experience in America. She challenged social injustice and called for compassion for the poor. Her work illuminated the experiences of black women and oppressed communities during the 1940s.
